Alsace Grand Cru AOC

The Alsace Grand Cru AOC is an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée for wines made in specific parcels of the Alsace wine region of France. The Grand Cru AOC was recognized in 1975 by the INAO with subsequent expansion in 1983, 1992, and 2007. The wines come from selected sites in the Alsace AOC region, located at altitudes between 200 m and 300 m. To qualify for Grand Cru status, a wine must first meet the Alsace AOC rules and then other strict requirements. For example, the yield of the vineyards has to be 55 hectoliters per hectare or less. There are 51 grand cru vineyards in the Alsace region, and the wines are known for their aromatic complexity, fruitiness, and excellent aging potential.

The Alsace Grand Cru AOC wines pair well with a variety of dishes, including traditional Alsatian cuisine such as choucroute (sauerkraut with sausages and other salted meats), coq au Riesling, and tarte flambée. The region’s white wines are particularly well-suited to complement the local cuisine, as well as a wide range of international dishes. The wines’ characteristics, influenced by the terroir and climate of the Alsace region, make them an excellent choice for those looking to explore the exceptional quality and distinctiveness of wines from this unique region.

The Alsace Grand Cru AOC is a testament to the region’s winemaking heritage and commitment to producing exceptional wines. The strict requirements and the limited number of vineyards designated as Grand Cru highlight the prestige and quality associated with these wines, making them highly sought after by wine enthusiasts around the world.
