Alto Adige DOC is a wine region located in the northernmost part of Italy, known for its exceptional wines that express a unique blend of Northern European logic and Southern European flair. The region’s diverse terroir, which includes a mix of elevations ranging from 200 to 1,000 meters above sea level, and a variety of soil types, provides an ideal environment for the cultivation of high-quality grapes. The wines of Alto Adige DOC are most famous for their racy and aromatic dry white wines, including Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer, as well as surprising red wines such as Lagrein and Schiava (Vernatsch), which resemble the world’s most popular reds. The region has 6 sub-regions and is home to 274 wineries and 5,000 growers, with 70% of the production being by cooperative wine cellars, the highest concentration of Michelin Stars in all of Italy, and 98% of all production being DOC wine – the highest in Italy.
The wines from Alto Adige DOC pair well with a variety of dishes, including traditional local cuisine and a wide range of international dishes. The white wines are particularly well-suited to complement seafood, while the red wines are a great match for grilled meats and aged cheeses. The region’s commitment to quality and tradition has made Alto Adige DOC wines highly sought after by wine enthusiasts around the world.
