Welcome at Aurelio Settimo’s cellar from Tiziana SETTIMO winemaker and owner. We are in Frazione Annunziata, a small hamlet under the Municipality of La Morra, one and the bigger of the 11 villages in the delimited area where we can grow Nebbiolo grapes for Barolo wine. Aurelio was my father and together with my sons and niece we are now at the fourth generation, always focused on quality and tradition. My grand parents begun this wine adventure in 1943, but till 60′ they practiced a mixed farming cultivating vineyards, fruit trees, hazelnuts and breeding animals.
Aurelio Settimo’s label was born in 1962 when my grand father Domenico died.
PRODUCTION:
We are wine growers, that means we are producing wine only with our own grapes. Our estate is totally 6,5 hectares, only red grapes: from 1 ha of Dolcetto we can produce 8.000 bottles of Dolcetto d’Alba and from 5,5 Nebbiolo for Barolo we could produce around 40.000 bottles, but we never reach these quantities due to the summer green harvest to reduce production, the average age of our vineyards and sometimes hail in summer season.
VINEYARDS:
The vineyards are all around the winery, and on the 5.5 hectares of Nebbiolo da Barolo just over 2 hectares are in south-east exposure where we produce the Classic Barolo and selecting the grapes from the younger vineyards for the Langhe Nebbiolo.
Almost 3 and a half hectares Nebbiolo for Barolo are in Rocche dell’Annunziata, an historical and first class Cru, MgA, in our little village, close to our cellar with a total extension of 30 hectares shared between more than 20 winegrowers.
This special soil, clay, limestone and blue marl, of marine origins, is giving to us a Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata powerful with elegant tannins and typical nose of roses, walnuts and when aged white truffles notes.
THE GREEN EXPERIENCE CERTIFICATION:
Since 1994 we have been following a guided and integrated struggle program of the Piedmont Region in the cultivation of our vineyards. And since 2017 vintage our wines are certified The Green Experience.
It’s not an organic certification but a Piedmont Network of more than 100 producers who practice a green, reconsidered and sustainable viticulture.
Sowing of legumes, herbal and floral essences in the vineyards as a natural fertilizer, removing of weeds under the vines with machines and by hand and no chemical weeding in our vineyards.
Practicing sexual confusion method to combat the Lobesia Botrana, a moth in the vineyard that can pierce the grape and cause the grapes to rot. With the spread of female moth hormones emitted from biodegradable diffusers, males are unable to reproduce.
