Our Story

Winery Finca Élez

A unique environment

What makes the wines of Finca Élez so special is a combination of factors: the vineyard environment, the climate and the care of the winemaker. The vineyard is surrounded by a thousand-year-old juniper forest and is situated at an altitude of more than 1,000 metres above sea level in an extreme continental climate. The soils are poor and stony and lie on limestone. These harsh climatic conditions prolong the ripening cycle of the grapes and the poor soil leads to lower yields. The result is high quality wines with a characteristic freshness and minerality.

Vineyard

At Pago Finca Élez, the 38 hectares of vineyards produce quality wines from Tempranillo and well-adapted French varieties.  They are literally French, as the seedlings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were brought from Bordeaux by our winemaker; Syrah and Chardonnay come from the Rhône.

History

Pago Finca Élez was founded in 1992. The winery was conceived with the ambition of producing unique and high-quality Spanish wines. Finca Élez was the first estate to obtain the Vinos de Pago appellation in Spain and later, in 2000, Finca Élez became one of the founding partners of Grandes Pagos de España. Almost 30 years later, in 2020, Finca Élez was acquired by its current owners, the agricultural engineers, Olallo Villoldo and Llanos Ruiz, passionate about the countryside and agriculture.

Enology

The technical team’s commitment to the environment: “The sincerest, the purest thing to do for the winemaker is to adapt to the place, to the vineyard”.

In the production of Finca Élez wines, we focus on the estate, on the exquisite care of the vineyards and on the viticulture. The protagonist is the terroir: the soil, the climate, the viticulture and its elements of differentiation.

What is the style of the wine and what are its characteristics?  Freshness, uniqueness, finesse, delicacy, minerality and authenticity.

Soil

Clay-limestone, poor, stony and well-drained, which contributes to low yields.

Climate

Extreme continental climate: An extreme climate with freezing winters and very hot summers, low rainfall and long periods of drought. This results in a wide temperature range of over 20 degrees between day and night during the ripening period of the grapes.

Pago Finca Élez produces quality wines from Tempranillo and well-adapted French grape varieties on its 38 hectares of vineyards, literally, as the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay grape varieties were brought from Bordeaux and Burgundy by our oenologists. The Syrah originally comes from the Rhône.
