Quinta da Folgorosa is located in the very heart of Lisbon Wine Region, with around 50 hectares of vineyards, located in Torres Vedras, about 40 minutes North of Lisbon. The history of winemaking at Quinta da Folgorosa exists since 1711 at least and since then, the winery has been totally committed to wine production as per the tradition in this region.

The history of Quinta da Folgorosa

At the beginning of the 19th Century, it was in the path of Napoleon on his way to conquer Lisbon. Being awfully close to the Lines of Torres Vedras forts, it was a natural stage for military action. The Duke of Wellington visited this area and is quoted to have said that white wines (based on Arinto grapes) from here were the best from Lisbon region. Later, it was the French Army who camped in the fields of Quinta da Folgorosa. The winery, in memory of this still call the camping area ”Junot” named after the French Marshal defeated by Wellington in 1808.

The Atlantic influenced grapes and wines of the winery

The winery is around 20 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, which influences their vineyards and give their wines a special freshness and minerality. Three fourth of their vineyards are dedicated to red grape cultivation where grapes like Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Cabernet Sauvignon, Castelão, Syrah, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional are grown. White grapes such as Arinto, Fernão Pires, Moscatel, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Viognier and Viosinho are also cultivated in the remaining vineyards.

Quinta da Folgorosa’s mission is to grow and create wine based on ancient traditions and solid technical knowledge with a modern twist and in harmony with nature. Their wines are made by hand as much as possible following the sustainable approach and the quality can be experienced in every glass of their wines.
