The Drama wine region has developed around Drama, a city and municipality in northeastern Greece in Macedonia, Greece and the capital of the regional unit of Drama (part of the East Macedonia and Thrace region).
The city of Drama has been mentioned since antiquity as a great wine-producing area, while today it hosts some of the best wineries in Greece.
Wonderful underground water formations, rivers, lakes, mountains, virgin forests, with a special micro climate, characterized as continental, which is temperate and dry with relatively cool summers, allows the slow maturation process, which leads to good quality results both for the Greek, as well as for the international varieties, which, in turn, gives wines of a very high level.
The plantations in the vineyards are older than 30 years, with exemplary crops, mainly in clay soils, composed infrastructure that is absolutely favorable for the cultivation of international varieties, where some of the finest Greek wines are produced. These wines keep winning international distinctions and awards.
The Grape Varieties of the Drama Wine Region
As varieties, we can find Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, but also Semillon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache Rouge, Ugni Blanc, Tempranillo and others lesser-known. Among the vast vineyards of the area, we will find very few vines with Greek origins such as Malagouzia and Agiorgitiko, with the main variety being the Cycladic Assyrtiko, which seems to have found its second home in Drama. In the new plantings that are being developed, the winemakers mainly experiment with Xinomavro, Vidiano and Mavroudi.
The vineyard of Drama has been essentially reborn in the last 30 years, thanks to the effort and perseverance of the winemakers of the area. Today, it continues to be one of the areas of Greece that shows intense viticultural activity with wines traveling around the world and in particularly difficult markets, such as the USA, Australia, China, Vietnam and most recently South Korea, on a journey full of taste and intensity.
Part of the Wine Route of Dionysus
The region is part of the Wine Route of Dionysus, one of the many routes of the Wine Routes of Northern Greece. There are 12 wineries, of which 8 can be visited, supported by privately owned vineyards and producing wines with a great personality and first-class wineries with quality and aesthetics.
