Merlot is a red wine grape variety that is widely planted throughout the world, primarily in the cooler regions where the climate favours red wine grapes. Wine expert Jancis Robinson describes the Merlot grape as one of the most versatile in the world.
The grapes were first engineered in France more than a hundred years ago due to the desire for creating a variety of grape that would attain high sugar levels. A fruity and full-bodied wine, Merlot has a wide color range. But generally, it is a red wine, with a tint of purple to black. It shows aromas of fruits and spices.
